1Overview
The Malawi eVisa is an electronic approval delivered as a PDF letter, covering tourism, business, visiting family and friends, medical, religious and study travel.
It does not cover transit (a separate transit visa applies) and does not authorize employment or volunteering.
Who needs it
- Travelers whose nationality requires a visa need it; since January 2, 2026 Malawi revoked its 2024 visa-waiver scheme, so most non-SADC nationals, including US, UK and EU citizens, now need a visa.
- Category 2 nationals may be eligible for visa on arrival, but applying for an eVisa beforehand is recommended.
- Roughly thirty countries are visa-exempt.
- Every traveler, including infants, needs their own application.
