Not for Indian passport holders. This service is meant for other nationalities: visa-exempt nationals (e.g. US, Canada, Australia, Japan, most EU citizens) visiting the UK; British and Irish citizens and holders of valid UK visas or EUSS status are exempt. If you travel on a different passport, choose that nationality in the form. Indian citizens should check the rules for their own passport before applying.

1Overview

The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a digital permission issued by the UK Home Office. It is not a visa, and it is linked electronically to the passport used in the application, with no stamp or sticker.

It covers tourism, business, visiting family and friends, short-term study and transit. It does not allow living or working in the UK, long-term study, marriage or claiming public funds.

Who needs it

  • Needed by non-visa nationals such as citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, Japan and most of the EU; every traveller, including infants and children, needs their own.
  • Visa nationals, and travellers with a criminal record, need a Standard Visitor Visa instead.
  • Indian citizens: India is listed as a visa-national country, so Indian passport holders are directed to a Standard Visitor Visa, not an ETA.
Entry points: Transit through UK border control also needs an ETA; airside transit at certain airports (for example Heathrow) may not currently require one, but rules can change. Carriers check permission before boarding.

2Requirements

  • PassportValid biometric passport, valid for the whole stay; the ETA is tied to this passport
  • Passport scanNeeded for the application
  • PhotoRecent digital passport-style photo
  • Email addressA valid email address to receive the ETA
  • Travel detailsFlight or ferry information
Photo and scans: A recent digital passport-style photo is required; a non-compliant photo is described as the most common reason applications are returned.
Validity: Valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first; multiple entries; stays of up to 6 months (180 days) per visit.

Important to know

  • Common denial causes: a non-compliant photo, a wrong passport number, and not disclosing relevant history.
  • If denied, the traveller cannot board; simple typos may allow reapplication, while suitability or criminal-history refusals may require a Standard Visitor Visa.
